Help Save Our Orchard

Join us and other concerned community members in opposing the TAVA Development housing project on this historic five-acre orange orchard in northeast Santa Ana.

Located at 1584 East Santa Clara, this property owned and operated since 1913 by the Sexlinger family, is the last orange orchard remaining in the City of Santa Ana. It’s five-acres represents what was once over 67,000 acres of citrus trees here in Orange County. Today there are less than 80 acres of citrus left in the entire county of Orange. Their’s was an important contribution to our agricultural history and it must be saved for generations to come. The Save Our Orchard Coalition envisions this historic site as a center for urban agriculture that will preserve and promote the important role of the small-scale citrus grower, (and that of every other citrus grower that used to operate in Orange County, large and small), in the industry that was once so vital to Orange County’s economy. The Sexlinger Center for Urban Agriculture will also be a place that will engage our community in growing and harvesting their own healthy food through education, community gardens and, the orange orchard itself.

Please attend the June 4, 2012 SA City Council Meeting

The next Santa Ana City Council meeting addressing the subject of the Sexlinger farmhouse and orange orchard will be held on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 6:00 pm. Your support is important. You can send a letter, attend the meeting and/or make public comments at the meeting.
This meeting will address the historic designation of the Sexlinger Farmhouse and Orange Orchard – a century-farm located at 1584 E. Santa Clara Avenue in NE Santa Ana. On April 5, the Santa Ana Historic Resources Commission (HRC) voted 5-2 to deny listing of the only intact example of the small citrus farm left in the city to the Santa Ana Register of Historical Properties (SARHP). SOOC filed an appeal and our City Council will make the final determination about this unique property’s historic status. Although the Planning Department nominated the property to the SARHP for the HRC, they have changed their stance and recommended that the City Council uphold the HRC decision to deny listing.
